Position Overview

Mount Joy Borough Authority in Lancaster County, PA, is looking for a dedicated Wastewater Operator to join our team. As a key member of our team, you operate the treatment plant to process wastewater; perform operation and maintenance to ensure continual, safe, and efficient operation of the wastewater treatment plant and collection systems that serve the borough and surrounding municipalities.

As a Wastewater Operator, you'll be hands-on, helping to ensure that the Authority’s water and sewer systems run smoothly.

The work hours are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., and on-call rotation for after-hours service calls. We offer a competitive hourly wage ($22 to $27/hr, depending on experience, plus overtime pay opportunities) and an excellent benefits package, which includes medical insurance, paid vacation and more.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plant Operation: Operate the treatment plant to process wastewater and sludge while maintaining effluent quality. This includes starting and stopping equipment like pumps and motors, observing operating conditions, and interpreting readings from meters and gauges
  • Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance on treatment plant and pump station equipment. Conduct visual and audible inspections of equipment, check flows, oil levels, and belts, and unload and use various chemicals.
  • System Monitoring: Operate a computer-based SCADA system for daily plant checks, diagnosing alarms, and adjusting process control setpoints.
  • Laboratory Testing: Collect samples and perform routine laboratory tests such as pH, BOD, COD, and total suspended solids analyses to assist with NPDES permit requirements.
  • Biosolids Processing: Operate or assist with the biosolids belt press, including adding polymer, setting speeds on sludge feed pumps, and running conveyors.
  • Collection System Maintenance: Operate a mobile television and vac/flusher truck to conduct internal inspections of sewer lines, eliminate obstructions, and clean and repair manholes.
  • General Duties: Perform various maintenance tasks, including cleaning facilities, maintaining fleet vehicles, and snow removal.
  • Respond to PA One Calls to field mark Authority-owned water and sewer lines.
  • Water Meter Services: Read water meters using a hand-held device, troubleshoot work orders, replace or repair meters, and respond to customer questions.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent is required
  • Possession of PA DEP Class B wastewater certification with Subclasses 1 and 4 or ability to obtain

  • Possess a valid PA motor vehicle license and a PA Commercial Driver's License (CDL), minimum Class B with Air Brake & Tanker Endorsement, or be willing to obtain your CDL license within one (1) year of employment

  • Be skilled in operating manual, pneumatic, and various types of heavy equipment, such as jackhammers, tampers, and masonry tools
  • Possess a thorough knowledge of safety practices is required. Knowledge of sanitary and sewer line maintenance and treatment plant standards is required, although this can be developed after employment
  • Work well with coworkers as part of a team and also work independently
  • Adhere to safety standards and recognize hazards in the workplace
  • Perform manual tasks and operate equipment for extended periods, sometimes in adverse weather
  • Meet the physical demands of the job, including frequently lifting up to 50 lbs., standing for long periods, bending, and reaching
  • Be polite and courteous when interacting with the general public
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and be comfortable using modern technology to document jobs and related work activity

Work Environment The work is frequently performed alone, frequently with interruptions, inside around noisy equipment, inside a normal office environment or outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Adherence to safety standards is required for work which is performed on and around a variety of potentially hazardous electrical or mechanical equipment, occasionally around hazardous substances.
